The winter blues are starting to set in. I have been dreaming about summer so decided to start a handful of seeds a few days earlier than planned. Most aspects of gardening make me happy and give me a motivated feeling about the future. I trying something a little different this year in an attempt to save space, I have a finite amount of space in my seed starting closet. I purchased 10 containers from the dollar tree that are roughly 7 1/2″ by 7 1/2″ by about 4″ deep. I am going to sprinkle the seeds in these containers to germinate and then for some will transplant into their own containers when they big enough transplant. The others, like the onions, are going to stay in this starting container until they go into the ground outside.
I started the delphinium, lavender, poppy and cone flower seeds that have been cold stratifying in the refrigerator for the past 6 or so weeks. Also started were onions, broccoli and geraniums (fresh seeds and seeds harvested from plants last year). Normally the started seeds would go into my grow room closet however I could not find the extension cord I normally use so had to way of getting power to the lights. Instead, I used my original 2 sets of grow lights and put the containers on top of a towel on the bedroom floor.
